The Mad Puppeteer

Somewhere

Somewhere thereโ€™s an angel with hair as dark as midnight skies
Just a little girl who could light the night with the starlight in her eyes
Somewhere she is waiting, because her heart beats all alone
She waits for the man who will take her to the place sheโ€™s never known
And somewhere thereโ€™s a boy who walks with a six-string on his back
He knows that he can be someone if he can get his life on track
Heโ€™s had all the girls throughout the years, but he’s never met the one
Who will stay with him forever to light his life like the rising sun

And he sings:

Life is a labyrinth, and love has never pointed the right way
Iโ€™ve begged and begged, but love has never come to save the day
Love is like the peaceful calm before the hurricane
Building dreams of hope before dashing them with rain

She walks past the corner where he sits with his guitar
He plays a soft, sweet melody thatโ€™s an arrow through her heart
As the notes hit her ears, her doubts and fears fade so far away
The melody is like a remedy to heal her lonely yesterdays
And as he watches her walk on by, his heart skips a beat
Because heโ€™s never seen an angel walking down a city street
But he knows sheโ€™s far too good for himโ€”he could never hope to say sheโ€™s mine
And sheโ€™s so afraid of love because itโ€™s failed her every time

And she sings:

Life is a labyrinth, and love has never pointed the right way
Iโ€™ve begged and begged, but love has never come to save the day
Love is like the peaceful calm before the hurricane
Building dreams of hope before dashing them with rain

She sits alone at home that night and pours herself another glass of wine
While he lies awake on a park bench somewhere in the city outside
She hums the soft, sweet melody and pretends heโ€™s by her side
While he composes her a lovesong strong enough to turn the tides
In the morning, he plays his lovesongโ€”magic on six steel strings
She walks past his corner and stops when she hears his new melody
He sees her turn and dares to hopeโ€”for a moment, their eyes meet
She takes a step toward the boy, and extends her hand as he rises to his feet

And they sing:

Life is a labyrinth, but love has come to point us the right way
Weโ€™ve begged and begged, and love has finally come to save the day
Love is like the grafted branch which has endured pain
But knows a joy unparalleled when two lives join in strength

Somewhere thereโ€™s an angel with hair as dark as midnight skies
Just a woman who could light the world with the love behind her eyes
And somewhere thereโ€™s a man who sits on the sofa by her side
He still has his old six-string, and he plays it for her every night

Life is a labyrinth, but love will always point us the right way
Just keep on begging, hoping, prayingโ€”and love will come to save the day
Love is like the grafted branch which has endured pain
But knows a joy unparalleled when two lives join in strength

  3. I had to read this poem more than once to allow the words to really sink in. I like how you structured the poem much like song lyrics.

    1. Thank you! When I started writing this, it actually was meant to be song lyrics. Somewhere along the line, it changed into being more of a poem, but I am glad that the lyrical structure still comes through!

(Typo alert: She walks past his corner stops when she hears his new melody – feel free to delete this part of my comment.)

And oops! Haha thank you for the correction. Isn’t it funny how we can proofread something a hundred times and still miss little things like that?

I really enjoyed this poem. It has such a musical quality in its rhyme that it feels like it could be a song as well.

Your words are so touching and incredibly romantic. Love is something we all want and long for and the way your lyrics express this need our insecurities regarding the love of a beautiful man or woman is priceless. The lyrics are enduring especially the last verse. I can picture them together growing old and loving each other. He would occasionally pick up that set of strings and play for her once again. Thank you so much for sharing this vivid piece about love.
